We had two "weekends" (our weekend, tuesday, wednesday and thursday) of no luck hunting! We heard that blue tongue had wiped out quite a bit of the population, and the ones that we did see, were EXTREMELY skiddish. They started running when you got within a mile! I finally had a great chance on the last Wednesday. I squeezed the trigger....nothing! I had my safety on - how dumb! Then he was off. Thursday morning, I had another great chance. I shot through some weeds which I thought would be fine, turns out they were more like bamboo than like wheat (which I thought it was), so I missed a shot that should have been impossible to miss. I knew that there was no way that I could shoot an antelope. If I got one it would be because the Lord did it. Thursday afternoon we needed to leave for home. Before I get into the story, I'll tell you that normally you try to
SNEAK up on the antelope from afar. Just before we left for home, I saw this antelope's butt right off the side of the road, so I yelled to Rick to "STOP!" And he yelled, "GET OUT!!!" So I got out, the antelope hightailed it. Rick yelled, "Get back in!" SO I did and we flew down that field road (more like a path) until we got to the end, and then he yelled, "GET OUT!" So I jumped out, and the antelope was heading straight for the fence at the edge of the property where we could hunt. They don't like fences though, and rarely jump them. They usually crawl under. When he got to the fence, about 100 yards away, rick whistled, and the antelope turned broadside and looked at us. Rick yelled, "SHOOT! SHOOT" and I kneeled down on some cactus and shot. Rick yelled, "GREAT SHOT!!!!" I didn't even know if I hit him, then he jumped around, took two steps and died. I was so elated I started crying! It was only of the Lord!

What a blessing! I am almost in tears for you, too! :D Love to hear the stories! I'm waiting to hear more good stories about your Elk hunt in a couple of weeks!

Melanie did make a great shot! She shot the buck right behind the front left shoulder...perfect! It was a very quick clean kill.

It's a nice buck. It's not very tall but it is pretty wide and the curl on the horns are really nice.

Rick, you gave Melanie such a great shot! Now it's your turn. I'm praying the Lord gives you an elk to fill up the freezer!

Amy, I was just going to invite you for TG, and then remembered we'll be in MT - so how about joining us at R&M's for the big turkey fest?

I must comment here to say, UNCLE TOM DRURY would think you were REALLY something, Melanie. He would BE SO PROUD of you!!!!(I'll have to show him the blog when I'm with them next.)
Way to go girlie!
I've pretty much failed. I think I went on 1 duck-hunting trip just to FREEZE, STARVE, and BE QUIET.....none of which I do well.
However, I DO enjoy target shooting!:-)

Mel, hope the next time you let Rick get one. No pushing him out of the way! Can't wait to get out to Montana for some fresh antelope (and maybe some Elk?)
Way to go great hunter.
